Canadian Flag Can Cozy (Tall)

Oh, Canada....


Canada Day is still a while away, but I'm living for tapestry crochet designs! So here's a new can cozy (for taller cans). Perhaps you're Canadian, love Canada, or a huge fan of Maple Syrup? Either way, your drink will be cute and cozy!

You will need:

  • A 4mm (G) crochet hook

  • Medium weight yarn in Red and White

  • A beer for when you're done! (or a non-alcoholic beverage, if you prefer!)


In order to make this cozy, you will need to know how to tapestry crochet in back loops only. There is a fantastic video tutorial via ChabePatterns explaining how to do both here:



This is the leaf pattern we will be using:



Let's get crocheting!


Row 1: 6sc in the second chain from hook, slip stitch to the first sc to join (6sc).

Row 2: Chain 1 (does not count as sc) 2sc in each stitch around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (12sc).

Row 3: Chain 1 (does not count as sc), 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next* repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (18sc).

Row 4: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (24sc).

Row 5: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 3 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 3 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (30sc).

Row 6: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 4 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 4 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (36sc).

Row 7: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 5 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 5 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (42sc).

Row 8: Chain 1, in BACK LOOPS ONLY, 1sc in each stitch around. Slip stitch to first sc to join.


Change to white


Row 9: Chain 1, in BACK LOOPS ONLY, 1sc in each stitch around.


Row 10 & 11: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 20 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the remaining (20) stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.

Row 12: Chain 1, Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 15 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next 11 stitches (change back to white), 1sc in the remaining (15) stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.

Row 13: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 16 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next 9 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the remaining (16) stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.

Row 14: Chain 1, Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 15 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next 11 stitches (change back to white), 1sc in the remaining (15) stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.


Row 15: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 14 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next 13 stitches (change back to white), 1sc in the remaining stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.


Row 16: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 13 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next 15 stitches (change back to white), 1sc in the remaining stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.


Row 17: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 12 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next 17 stitches (change back to white), 1sc in the remaining stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.


Row 18: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 13 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next 15 stitches (change back to white), 1sc in the remaining stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.


Row 19: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 13 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next 4 stitches (change to white), 1 sc in the next stitch, (change to red), 1sc in the next 5 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next stitch, (change to red), 1sc in the next 4 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the remaining stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.


Row 20: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 13 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the next stitch (change to red), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next 5 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the next stitch (change to red), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the remaining stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.


Row 21 & 22: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 17 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next 7 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the remaining stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.


Row 23: Chain 1 1sc in the same stitch and the next 17 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the next stitch (change to red), 1sc in the next 3 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next stitch (change to red) 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the remaining stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.


Row 24: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 20 stitches (change to red), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the remaining stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.


Row 25 & 26: (white only for this round) Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and each stitch around. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.


Row 27 & 28: (red only for this round) Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and each stitch around. Slip stitch to the first sc to join. Fasten off, weave in ends.
