I recently made a bun beanie using one of my favourite stitches; the puff stitch! I used Caron X Pantone yarn, a relatively new product from Caron.
X Pantone yarn is actually 5 mini-skeins sold together as a braid, each a different colour that creates a beautiful palette. It is a merino wool blend yarn, so it feels extremely soft, cozy, and it's never itchy!
The beanie/toque above was made with the Ultra Violet Minerals palette. I managed to make it using only one braid.

With this pattern and one braid of Caron X Pantone, you'll have your own (adult sized) Bun Beanie to show off, or gift to a friend.
This pattern is adult size, and should fit most heads comfortably. Even if your head is a little on the larger size, there is some wiggle room as the yarn and stitches can stretch.
You will need:
6.5mm hook (K)
One braid of Caron X Pantone Yarn, in the colour palette of your choice. If you are unable to locate this particular yarn, then you can use any yarn with a chunky weight (5) in the colours of your choice.
To make this beanie you will need to know how to make a single crochet and the puff stitch. These are the only two stitches we'll be using in this pattern.

Let's get crocheting!
We will start at the bottom of the beanie, or the brim.
Starting with your first colour cast onto your hook, chain 7 and turn.
Row 1: Working back along the chain, make 1sc in each chain (6sc). Chain 1, turn.
Row 2 - 58: Working in BACK LOOPS ONLY, make 1sc in each stitch until you reach the end (6sc). Chain 1, turn.
Once you have done this, it should wrap around your head comfortably, or with a little stretch to fit. Slip stitch to the first row to join to create the band. Fasten off, weave in ends.
We will now be starting at row 1 again for the Puff stitches, as it will be less confusing.
Row 1: With a new colour tied to your hook, Make a puff stitch under the first sc at the top of the brim (see below).
Continue along the brim, making a puff stitch at the top of each of the sc "grooves" that are facing the same way. Continue around until you are back at the beginning. You should have 29 puff stitches. Slipstitch to join to the first puff, then fasten off.
Row 2 - 6: With a new colour cast onto your hook, insert the hook into one of the spaces between the puffs. Chain 2, then make a puff stitch.1 puff stitch in each space around (29 puffs in total). Slipstitch to join to the first puff to join.
Now we will be decreasing the beanie.
Row 7: Start by making one puff stitch in one of the spaces as you would for each new row. 1 puff in the next 3 spaces. SKIP ONE SPACE, and make one puff stitch in the next space. 1 puff in the next 3 spaces. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next three spaces. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next three spaces. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next three spaces. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next three spaces. Slip stitch to the first puff to join, fasten off. (24 puffs)
Row 8: Start by making one puff stitch in one of the spaces as you would for each new row .1 puff stitch in each space around. Slipstitch to join to the first puff to join, fasten off. (24 puffs)
Row 9: Start by making one puff stitch in one of the spaces as you would for each new row. 1 puff in the next 2 spaces. SKIP ONE SPACE, and make one puff stitch in the next space. 1 puff in the next 2 spaces. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next 2 spaces. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next 2 spaces. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next 2 spaces. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next 2 spaces. Slip stitch to the first puff to join, fasten off. (18 puffs).
NOTE: For some, at this point your beanie will be the right size for your head and hair. I understand that many people have a LOT of hair, or thick, bushy hair which would require a larger hole at the top to accommodate your bun/ponytail. So before continuing, now would be a good time to decide if it's the right size, or if you'd like to decrease further. My hair is extremely fine and straight to I don't need a large hole for my bun.
If you're happy with the size, my only other instruction would be to make a row of single crochets in each puff, and each space between the puffs, before fastening off :)

Row 10: Start by making one puff stitch in one of the spaces as you would for each new row. 1 puff stitch in each space around. Slipstitch to join to the first puff to join, fasten off. (18 puffs)
Row 11: Start by making one puff stitch in one of the spaces as you would for each new row. 1 puff in the next space. SKIP ONE SPACE, and make one puff stitch in the next space. 1 puff in the next space. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next space. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next space. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next space. Skip one space, 1 puff in the next space. 1 puff in the next space. Slip stitch to the first puff to join. (12 puffs).
Row 12: Either using the same colour or a new one, make 1sc in each puff stitch and every space between the puffs. Slip stitch to the first sc to join, fasten off, weave in ends.
Aaaaand you're done!
