You will need:
6.5mm (K) Hook
Chunky weight yarn (5) in White, Black and either Green or Red, depending on what colour you would like your Mushroom - I used the double strand method with Caron Simply Soft.
Before we begin:
In order to make this beanie, you will need to know how to tapestry crochet in back loops only. There is a fantastic video tutorial via ChabePatterns explaining how to do both here:
Actually, with the exception of the first row, the ENTIRE beanie will be crocheted in back loops only.
When changing colours, my instructions will go as follows: "1sc in the next 14 stitches (change to green)" - this means you will change to green on the 14th stitch. The stitch itself will not be green, but the next one will be, so you must switch yarns on that stitch to continue. I hope that made sense.
Additionally, sometimes you will have to change from one colour to another for ONLY ONE STITCH. For example, 14 sc in black, change to white, 1sc in white, change to green. This can get a little fiddly, but be patient!
Rows 1 to 11 are the top of the beanie; from row 12 onwards, we will be creating the mushroom. As we are crocheting from the top down, we will also be working from the top of the mushroom to the bottom. Therefore, as we are making the beanie the image will appear to be upside down!
The left is how it will appear as you crochet, and the right will be the finished project!

Chain 2
Row 1: In the second chain from hook, make 6sc. Slip stitch to the first sc to join (6sc).
Row 2: Chain 1, (does not count as sc), in BACK LOOPS ONLY, 2sc in each stitch around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (12sc).
Row 3: Chain 1, (does not count as sc), 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next* repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (18sc).
Row 4: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (24sc).
Row 5: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 3 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 3 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (30sc).
Row 6: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 4 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 4 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (36sc).
Row 7: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 5 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 5 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (42sc).
Row 8: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 6 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 6 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (48sc).
Row 9: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 7 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 7 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (54sc).
Row 10: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 8 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 8 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (60sc).
Row 11: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 9 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 9 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (66sc).
Row 12: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 46 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next stitch (change to green), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next stitch (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 15 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Row 13: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 44 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 3 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 3 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 13 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Row 14: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 43 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to green) 1sc in the next 4 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to green) 1sc in the next stitch (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 12 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Row 15: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 42 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next stitch (change to green), 1sc in the next 10 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next stitch (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 11 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Row 16: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 42 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 4 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 11 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Row 17 & 18 : Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 41 stitches (change to white). 1sc in the next 3 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the next 6 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the next 3 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 10 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Row 19: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 41 stitches (change to white). 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 6 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 10 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Row 20: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 41 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next 5 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 4 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next 5 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 10 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Row 21: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 41 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the next 10 stitches (change to green), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 10 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
At this point, you can cut off the green yarn as it will no longer be needed.
Row 22: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 44 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to black) 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 13 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Row 23: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 43 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 3 stitches (change to black) 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the next 2 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the next stitch (change to white), 1sc in the next 3 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 12 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Row 24: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 43 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 10 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 12 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Row 25: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and the next 44 stitches (change to white), 1sc in the next 8 stitches (change to black), 1sc in the remaining 13 stitches. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
You can now cut the white yarn, as the final row will be done in only black.
Row 26: Chain 1, 1sc in the same stitch and each stitch around. Slip stitch to the first sc to join. Fasten off, weave in ends.
Aaaaaaand you're done! Now jam that beanie on your noggin' and show it off to your friends! Wear it to the next lan/convention, or gift it to a friend!
