You will need:
4mm (G) crochet hook
Medium weight yarn (acrylic or 100% cotton is best)
NOTE: Most coffee cups can differ somewhat in size between cafes. The cup I am using in this tutorial is a 16oz (454ml). For some cafes this is considered medium, to others it is a large.
Please keep in mind that this pattern will make a sleeve large enough for a 16oz cup, but if your cup is larger (or wider) you will want to adjust the number of stitches you make in the foundation row before joining. I highly recommend you keep your next coffee cup, so you can check the gauge and measure the foundation chain before you join.
Let's get crocheting!
SLEEVE
NOTE: We will be changing the colours every row. We will start with black, then change to white in row two, then back to black in row three, white in four, aaaaand so on and so forth ;)
STARTING WITH BLACK
Row 1: Foundation sc chain 39. Make sure there are no twists in the chain - slip stitch to join to the first chain. (39sc)
CHANGE TO WHITE
Row 2 - 12: Chain 1 (DOES NOT COUNT AS SC), 1sc in the same stitch and each stitch around. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.
Fasten off, weave in ends
SKELETON FACE
The face will be crocheted in continuous rounds. I.E, we won’t be joining at the end of each round, rather, we will be moving onto the next one by continuing to crochet into the first stitch of the previous round.
You will need to keep track of your stitches by either counting them meticulously, or using a stitch marker (I’d go with the latter). Incidentally, you don’t necessarily need to buy a stitch marker, you can simply use a loose piece of yarn.
Round 1: 6sc in the second chain from hook (6sc)
Round 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12sc)
Round 3: 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next, repeat around (18sc)
Round 4: 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, repeat around (24sc)
Round 5: 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 3 stitches, repeat around (30sc)
Round 6: 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 4 stitches, repeat around (36sc)
Round 7: 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 5 stitches, repeat around (42sc)
Round 8: 1sc in each stitch around, fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew to the sleeve (42sc)
EYES
Use your 3.25mm hook
Make 2
Round 1: 6sc in the second chain from hook (6sc)
Round 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12sc)
Round 3: 1sc in each stitch around, fasten off, leave a long tail to sew to the face
ASSEMBLY!
Assembly is super easy! You can use a yarn needle to sew the eyes to the face and then the face to the sleeve, but I used my crochet hook! (See below)
Sewing the mouth is very easy; it doesn't matter if it's a bit wonky, as it doesn't have to be precise, and it's meant to look a little rustic (see below):
Aaaaand you're done!
