Skull Tapestry Wristband

Updated: Mar 22, 2023

Wristbands and cuffs need a comeback! What better way to do that than with skulls? I've recently started using the tapestry crochet technique and I'm a hooked hooker! So grab a hook and let's crochet some skulls!

N.B: Writing my patterns can be quite time consuming and I do my best to make sure they are clear, coherent and easy to follow. Since I provide them for free, I would appreciate it if you could please follow me on Instagram @slipstitch_hollow or on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/slipstitchhollow.

You will need:

  • 4mm (G) crochet hook

  • Light weight yarn (3) in black and white (or any two colours you like, it's up to you!)

Before we get started, it's imperative that you know how to do tapestry crochet. This pattern isn't too difficult, but if you've never done tapestry before then I'd recommend crocheting a small swatch and practise switching back and forth with two colours.

Below are some video tutorials which will walk you through tapestry crochet.

For this pattern, with the exception of the first (foundation) and last rows, all the stitches in the remaining rows will be done in BACK LOOPS ONLY. So as we interchange colours, it will always be in back loops only. The reason for this is quite simple: the final product looks a lot better.

This is the image we will be using for the pattern:

(thanks to a quick image search!)

If at any point you are confused, you can refer back to this image, or the photos of the wristband.

Let's get crocheting!

STARTING WITH BLACK:

Either chain a length that will fit comfortable around your hand, slip stitch to join, then make 1sc in each chain

OR

Make a foundation sc chain that comfortably fits around your hand, then slip stitch to join.

My foundation chain reached 38sc. (I have pretty skinny wrists)

Row 1: Chain 1, (IN BACK LOOPS ONLY) 1sc in the same stitch and each stitch around. Slip stitch to the first sc to join.

Here is where we will begin the skull, starting from the bottom (the teeth) up. Where you choose to start crocheting with the white is up to you, as every wristband will be a different size, but you can follow my pattern if you like!

Row 2: Chain 1, (back loops only) 1sc in the same stitch and the next 10 stitches (change to white on the 10th stitch), 1sc in white (change back to black), 1sc in black (change to white again), 1sc in white (change to black), 1sc in black, (chain to white) 1sc in white (change to black) 1sc in black (change to white) 1sc in white (change to black), 1sc in black for the remaining stitches of the row.
