Mr Squish Bear Amigurumi Pattern

Updated: Feb 11, 2019

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine gifted me some yarn she'd acquired - it was the leftovers of Bernat Blanket in Mallard Wood. Naturally, I immediately set to work creating something.

I've recently noticed across social media (instagram especially) a LOT of amigurumi being made using the soft, plush, chunky-sized yarn, and so I decided to make a bear with the Bernat blanket.

So allow me to present to you, Mr Squish! A super-soft, cuddly, easy and quick to make bear, perfect for young ones! This patterns works up very fast, and if you use Bernat Blanket, you could easily make two, as it doesn't require a lot of yarn.

NOTE: This pattern also used some Caron Simply soft for the Muzzle. I used a double strand cast on to a 6.5mm (K) hook, and some black yarn for the nose!

N.B: Writing my patterns can be quite time consuming and I do my best to make sure they are clear, coherent and easy to follow. Since I provide them for free, I would appreciate it if you could please follow me on Instagram @slipstitch_hollow or on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/slipstitchhollow.

You will need:

  • Bernat Blanket Yarn (or alternatively, a chunky yarn of your choice)

  • 8mm hook

  • Caron simply soft yarn & 6.5mm hook (K)

  • Polyfil stuffing

  • 12mm safety eyes

Let's get crocheting!

HEAD AND BODY:

Chain 2

Round 1: In second chain from hook, 6sc (6sc)

Round 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12sc)

Round 3: 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next, repeat around (18sc)

Round 4: 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, repeat around (24sc) Round 5: 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 3 stitches, repeat around (30sc)

Round 6 - 10: 1sc in each stitch around. (30sc)

Now would be an ideal time to attach the safety eyes. I placed mine at round 7 (approximately).

Round 11: sc2tog, 1sc in the next 3 stitches, repeat around (24sc)

Round 12: sc2tog, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, repeat around (18sc)

Start to stuff the head.

Round 13: sc2tog, 1sc in the next stitch, repeat around (12sc)

Round 14: 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next (18sc)

Round 15: 1sc in each stitch around (18sc)

Round 16: 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, repeat around (24sc)

Round 17 - 23: 1sc in each stitch around (24sc)

KEEP STUFFING!

Round 24: sc2tog, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, repeat around (18sc)

Make sure your bear is stuffed firmly.

Round 25: sc2tog, 1sc in the next stitch, repeat around (12sc)

Round 26: sc2tog, repeat around, fasten off, weave in ends.

EARS:

Chain 3, 10hdc in third chain from hook, slip stitch to first hdc, fasten off leaving long tail.

ARMS AND LEGS:

These are super simple.

Make a double crochet chainless foundation of 7 stitches. Fasten off, leaving a tail to sew to the body.

Here's a video explaining how to make the double crochet chinless foundation via Gleeful Things:

Once you have made 2 arms and 2 legs, you can sew them on. The arms are positioned just a bit below the neck, and the legs at opposite side of the base of the body. You can adjust the position until you find a placement that you are happy with! Using pins to hold them in place can help too.

MUZZLE:

Chain 2

Round 1: In second chain from hook, 6sc (6sc)

Round 2: 2sc in each stitch around (12sc)

Round 3: 2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next, repeat around (18sc)

Round 4 & 5: 1sc in each stitch around. Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew to the face.

Before sewing on the muzzle, take some black yarn to sew on a nose. From there, you can sew the muzzle to the face.

Aaaaand you're done! A cute, squishy, fuzzy little bear for yourself, your children, or a friend! I hope you like this pattern and if you do make Mr Squish, please share your work! I'd love to see! :)
