Super Mario Beer Cozy Pattern

Updated: Mar 22, 2023

It's a-me!

If you love Mario (but literally everyone does) and a tall beer on a Friday afternoon during Summer, grab your yarn and keep reading :) (Super Mario is copyright Nintendo. I own nothing. Do not sell the pattern, or alter it to claim it as your own.)

You will need:

  1. A 4mm (G) crochet hook

  2. Medium weight yarn in Red, Brown, Orange, Black, Blue, and one different colour for the "background" - I used Green!

  3. A tall beer for when you're done! (or a non-alcoholic beverage, if you prefer!)

Some information before we begin:

  • This is ONE SIZE ONLY - for a tall can (i.e. 473ml. The more beer, the better)

  • In order to make this cozy, you will need to know how to tapestry crochet in back loops only. There is a fantastic video tutorial via ChabePatterns explaining how to do both here:

  • I've written this pattern differently to my previous patterns that include tapestry crochet. I have been researching pattern writing and have decided to adopt a different style, as I feel my other patterns are somewhat verbose. So hopefully this pattern will be less confusing!

In the rows that include tapestry crochet, They will go as follows (for example):

Row 10: G: Chain 1, (13), B: (4), G: (4), B: (4), G: (17), slip stitch to the first sc to join.

Each colour used for the row is abbreviated to a letter, in this example there are only two - G: Green, and B: Brown.

So in this example, the first 13 single crochets would be in Green, then followed by 4 in Brown, then 4 in Green, then another 4 in Brown, then the remaining 17 in Green.

( I have listed all the abbreviations on the pattern below)

You will need to change to your new colour on the last stitch of the previous colour. So for example, the first 13 stitches in this example row are Green, so you will need to change to brown on the 13th stitch. The stitch itself will be Green, but you will have switched to brown for the next 4 stitches.

I hope that made sense. Phew!

  • Sometimes you will have to change from one colour to another for ONLY ONE STITCH. For example, 14 sc in green, change to white, 1sc in white, change back to green. This can get a little fiddly, but be patient! Here is an image you can use as a reference as you make your cozy:

  • As we crochet Mario, we will be starting from his shoes moving up to his hat. The first 9 rows will be the bottom of the cozy; Mario starts at row 10.

  • The first 7 rows are regular single crochets, but from row 8 onward, every stitch will be a single crochet in BACK LOOPS ONLY. Crocheting in back loops creates the pixelated affect we are aiming for.

  • In this pattern, Chain 1 DOES NOT COUNT AS A SINGLE CROCHET. Therefore, the first stitch is worked into the same stitch as the join.

Let's get crocheting!

Row 1: 6sc in the second chain from hook, slip stitch to the first sc to join (6sc).

Row 2: Chain 1 (does not count as sc) 2sc in each stitch around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (12sc).

Row 3: Chain 1 (does not count as sc), 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next* repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (18sc).

Row 4: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 2 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (24sc).

Row 5: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 3 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 3 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (30sc).

Row 6: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 4 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 4 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (36sc).

Row 7: Chain 1, 2sc in the same stitch, 1sc in the next 5 stitches, *2sc in the next stitch, 1sc in the next 5 stitches, repeat ** around, slip stitch to the first sc to join (42sc).

Row 8 & 9: Chain 1, in BACK LOOPS ONLY, 1sc in each stitch around. Slip stitch to first sc to join. (42sc)

Now we will start to incorporate the other colours to create Mario :)

Each colour will be abbreviated as:

Brown - B

Blue - BL

Black - BK

O - Orange

R - Red

G - Green

Green is the background colour I used for the remainder of the cozy; if you have chosen a different colour then remember that G is your background :)

Row 26 - 29: G: Chain 1, 1sc in each stitch around, slip stitch to the first sc to join. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Aaaaand you're done! Time to crack open a tall beer (or non-alcoholic beverage) to celebrate! ;)
